Hello friend,
We're Luna The Artcrane, a global community of dreamers and builders, and we're bringing one of the most well known art cars to Playa.
You’re welcome to join us in 2024!
Our story
The camp, debuted in 2019 as Shmit16, was created as a permanent space for our community to gather every year and experience the essence of Burning Man. Over the years the camp has evolved into Luna The Artcrane, or simply — Luna, a massive art car equipped with a powerful Funktion-One sound system that we first brought to Playa in 2022. Ever since, Luna has been co-creating the transformative experience of Burning Man with her moon-shaped design and collaborative spirit.
Luna principles
- Everyone contributes. Everyone who joins us actively contributes to Luna and the camp, whether it's keeping the camp tidy, preparing camp meals, or taking shifts at Luna on Playa. Creating something together is the best way to connect.
- Luna is our contribution to Burning Man. With Luna, we are actively shaping the Burning Man experience rather than merely observing it. A significant 80% of our budget goes towards creating the magic of Burning Man through Luna, and 20% — towards internal camp infrastructure. The camp is a non-profit with transparent finance.
- We balance comfort and self-reliance. Our camp offers ample and cozy communal spaces, delicious food, private connection events, and a stellar community to share it with. The camp does not provide personal essentials — you’ll need to procure your own RV or a shiftpod, a Burning man ticket, and other items. We will onboard you and give you pointers.
- We value our time together. A full week at Burning Man is the best for many reasons. If dates are critical for you this year, we require a minimum presence of 5 nights. Anything less makes it challenging to fully experience Burning Man and form meaningful connections within the camp.
Cost sharing
It takes over $450,000 and 10,000 volunteer hours to build Luna and the camp every year.
The baseline camp contribution consists of
- a $3,500 fee, and
- a commitment to join construction or deconstruction team (4 full days before or after Burn), and
- some involvement in prep in July and August before Burn. This may include attending a build weekend if you’re in California, helping with one of the workflows, or ad-hoc tasks.
However, we recognize everyone’s diverse abilities to contribute, so we provide various ways to participate in the camp financially and through time commitment. We value the dedication of the core team and builders working on Luna year-round and offer discounts, we value the generous support of our donors, and everyone in between. All are warmly welcomed.
